Vaughan Ontario History

The Village of Vaughan was officially incorporated in 1920 as the Town of New work. The name was changed in 1926 to remain in honour of former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. The origin of the name “Vaughan” can be traced back to the arrival of the first European settlers. It is believed that the name “Vaughan” is derived from a local Indian word meaning “plenty of water”. This name is often still used today.

New rich was originally settled as a farming community, with a few sawmills, an ironworks, and a few stores serving the local agricultural community. In 1915, the New Rich Town Council purchased 2 acres of land on the southwest corner of Elora Rd. and Richview Ave. to be the site of a planned municipal waterworks.

The land was later sold to the City of Vaughan in 1928 and became the site of the existing waterworks. The waterworks were completed in 1936, and served the City of Vaughan and the surrounding area until 1991. In that year, a fire destroyed the waterworks, leaving only the foundations and a few pipes. The fire also consumed a large portion of the former townsite, leaving behind only a few foundations and a small hill of charred earth.
